Contact a few different gynecologists or obstetricians in your desired specialty and chat on the phone with a nurse to get contact information, basic services, insurance, medicine prescription information, clinic hours, availability, and specialty, such as obstetrics (OBGYN). Then make an appointment with the doctor at the office, hospital, medial clinic or center. Inquire about specific services, such as birth control, infertility, breast exams, yearly gynecological exams and pap smears, hysterectomy surgery, endometriosis, menopause, pediatrics and delivery, abortion, family planning, pregnancy, osteoporosis, midwife care, pediatrician assistance, prenatal care, and ultrasound. When wondering how to choose the right physicians for you, check out each doctor’s background, whether women or men. Find out how long they have been in obstetrics practice, what schooling they’ve had, what their clinic hours are, internal residency information, and what their availability is. Find out if the doctor is properly licensed and has a clean record. You can go online to research doctors’ backgrounds thoroughly. It’s wise to find gynecologists near you, rather than far away so you can get to him or her quickly and easily in the event of an emergency. When visiting with the physicians, assess the appearance of the medical clinic, hospital, center or office, making sure the building is well maintained and clean. Meet with several staff members and make note if they are timely and well groomed. You want to choose a gynecologist you feel comfortable with, whether women or men, but you also want to feel comfortable and natural with other health staff members such as nurses too. It’s important to make sure the obstetrician takes your insurance. If not, move on.
